Come and Sit Close • Inspired by Matthew 19:14 • Ages 5–8

It was story time at church. Deb wiggled on the rug. Her shoe tapped the floor. A grown-up whispered that the children were too noisy. Deb’s ears got hot. She looked at her shoes.
Weebster held the picture book open. The page showed Jesus with children close to him. The words said to let the children come. Weebster turned the book so Deb could see. He did not tell her to sit still.
Deb sat up. She was not too much. She was a child, and the story had room for her. Weebster passed her a cracker from his pocket. Mocha lay down beside them and only sighed. That was quiet enough.
They walked home and told the story again in their own words. Deb said, “I can be little and still belong.” Weebster said, “Me too.” Mocha leaned on Deb’s shoe. That was her way of sitting close.
