🐾 Animals

Animal names are the easiest first list, because a child already has a favorite. This page is the English set used in the animal games: the word, a respelling you can say, and one short sentence. Do not march through all thirty-two in one sitting. Pick three that match real life, such as a pet, an animal on a book cover, or a dog if you are talking about Mocha. On a walk, name only what you both can see, then come back and find that same word here. Repeat the sentence under the word. Save the rest for another day.

The respelling marks the loud syllable with capital letters. It is a cue for reading aloud, not a dictionary pronunciation. Sheep stays sheep for one or many. Mouse is the singular; mice is the plural, and it is not on this list. Say the sentence as it is written before you invent a longer one.

The flashcards open with English on one side and Spanish on the other, which is the usual pair when you start from the home page.

A verse to read together

Read this aloud if it fits your home. These words are Genesis 1:25 in the King James Version, a public-domain English Bible.

And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:25, King James Version
